Frequently Asked Questions
The monitor tracks multiple data points and uses deep learning to accurately track your cat’s (or cats’) weight, as well as the number of visits, waste type, and time of day. You can find this data within the Events tab and the Cats tab of the Petivity app.
Petivity will track your cat’s litterbox behavior and weight each day to establish a meaningful baseline for your cat. If you have more than one cat, you’ll be asked to help the artificial intelligence system learn by labeling litterbox events within the app to help the system learn which cat is which. Petivity will develop a unique profile for each cat. Then, over time, the system will assess changes in each cat’s baseline weight and behavior to highlight changes that may be significant but not readily apparent. To ensure that Petivity is able to deliver the best possible insights, proper setup is essential. Be sure to follow the recommended guidelines for setting up your monitor.
You can choose from one of two options for powering your Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor: use either 6 AA-size batteries (included) or the included wall charger and cord. Choose whichever is most convenient for you. Do not use the batteries and wall charger together. Within the Monitor tab of the Petivity app, you can see the battery life for each monitor or, if using the power cord, see if each monitor is properly plugged in.
If using the power cord:
• Please note that any use of a power cord carries risks such as cats or other animals chewing cables or equipment, electrical shock, and tripping hazards. If you’re using the power cord to power the monitor, check for any evidence that your cat or other pets have been chewing on the cord. If you see any evidence of chewing, we recommend switching to battery power.
• If using the power cord, please avoid high traffic areas to prevent tripping.
• To set up the monitor with the power cord, locate the power jack on the bottom of your monitor. Plug the power cord in and run the cord through one of the provided channels.
• If at any time you encounter any malfunction or other issue with a monitor, please immediately cease using the monitor and turn it off (if safely able to do so).
• Please do not use other power cords with Petivity except for the one provided. If you have issues, please contact our Customer Support team by calling 866-979-2477 or filling out the Contact Us form on our Support page.
• If your cat is a cord-chewer, we suggest using batteries.
If using batteries:
• Please use Alkaline AA batteries only. Do not use rechargeable or lithium or other non-Alkaline batteries. Do not mix old and new batteries or batteries from different brands. Dispose of batteries in accordance with local guidelines.
• Please monitor condition of batteries and remove/replace if showing signs of decay or corrosion.
• Please follow the directions to ensure proper installation of battery door & screws. If not properly installed, Battery Compartment screws or door can pop out if dropped or damaged. Batteries and screws can become a choking hazard to animals and children. If Battery Compartment door is lost, misplaced or damaged, contact our Customer Support team by calling 866-979-2477 or filling out the Contact Us form on our Support page.
• Please remove litterbox from the Petivity monitor before replacing batteries.
Although the monitor turns on automatically when plugged in or when operating on battery power, giving the button on the side a short, quick press will manually wake the device up. The button features an LED light that, depending on its appearance, indicates the status of the device. Learn more about what each light color means here. To check if your monitor is powered on, you can give the status button a short, quick press. A solid green light will display if powered correctly. Within the Monitor tab of the Petivity app, you can see the battery life for each monitor or, if using the power cord, see if each monitor is properly plugged in.
• Install the App. Before powering up your monitor, download the free mobile app for iOS or Android, which will help guide you through the rest of the set-up process. Remember, you’ll need to have Android 10 or higher, or iPhone or iPod Touch running iOS14 or higher to complete installation.
• Prepare for Set Up. Ensure that your phone is connected to your home Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth is enabled. You can do this in the “Settings” menu of your phone. Have your home Wi-Fi password handy.
• Choose a Power Source. You have two options for powering your monitors. Use either the supplied power cord or six AA batteries. Choose whichever is most convenient for you. If using the power cord, find the power jack on the bottom of your monitor. Plug the power cord in and run the cord through one of the provided channels.
• Set Up Your Monitor and Profile in the App. Open the Petivity App and follow the set-up instructions to complete your monitor set up and create an account for your cat, or cats.
Make sure your monitor is powered on (plugged into the wall or batteries inserted) and that Bluetooth is active on your phone. Have your Wi-Fi password ready. The app will instruct you to wake your monitor. If the blue light on the monitor is not already flashing, press and hold the button for about 2 seconds until the light turns blue, then release the button. The blue light should continue to flash. Within the Petivity app, select your monitor from the list. Scan for your Wi-Fi network. Enter your Wi-Fi password (if applicable).
Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor is designed to work with most litterboxes and litter pans. The exceptions are triangular-shaped or self-cleaning litterboxes or litterboxes larger than 16” x 21”.
• The monitor works best in an indoor, climate-controlled environment. Avoid using the monitor outdoors or in areas with high humidity, high heat, or direct sunlight. Where possible, we recommend not placing the unit on a surface that receives continuous sunlight.
• When placing the monitor in your home, ensure it is placed at least 1 inch away from all walls or other obstacles. Failure to provide adequate space may cause the monitor to get stuck on obstacles and interfere with data or readings. Placing the monitor next to high vibration items like a washer or dryer or in high traffic areas may affect the performance of the monitor.
• Avoid using litterboxes larger than 21” (length) x 16” (width). Using a larger box may cause the box to slip off the monitor when the cat is near or on the edge of the box.
• The monitor is designed to function best on a smooth, level, hard surface. The monitor should also work on a short pile carpeted surface but, where possible, we recommend the use of a smooth, level, hard surface. If using a mat or placing the monitor on carpeting, raise the adjustable feet to ensure the monitor is not touching the carpet, mat or other flooring surface. Uneven monitors may cause a disruption in data.
• The Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor utilizes Wi-Fi and should be placed within reasonable range of a router.
• If at any time you encounter any malfunction or other issue with a monitor, please immediately cease using the monitor, turn it off (if safely able to do so) and contact our Customer Support team by calling 866-979-2477 or filling out the Contact Us form on our Support page.
• If using USB power, we recommend placing the monitor such that neither the monitor nor the cord presents a tripping hazard.
The monitor is designed to function best on a smooth, level, hard surface. If you’re using a mat or placing the monitor on carpeting, raise the adjustable feet to ensure the bottom of the monitor is not touching the carpet, mat or other flooring surface. If you use a litter mat, it is important to make sure all four feet are on the mat. Uneven monitors can cause a disruption in data. Also, check that your monitor is balanced. While your litterbox is off the monitor, press each corner of the monitor separately to test for a wobble. If you detect a wobble, this means your monitor is imbalanced. Use the adjustable feet to make small adjustments in the foot height until the monitor doesn’t wobble. (Turn the feet clockwise to extend, and counterclockwise to retract.) Place your litterbox on top. Make sure your device and litterbox have at least a one-inch clearance from wall, furniture or other objects.
Yes, Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor works with multiple cats. To differentiate between your cats, Petivity may need your help to train its AI (artificial intelligence). Through the first few weeks of use, you’ll be notified when a litterbox event needs more information from you. After confirming at least eight events per cat, the frequency of these prompts will decrease. Please note that the Petivity system’s performance has been validated in households that have no more than three cats. We cannot guarantee performance in households with more than three cats, and some aspects of the system, like the insight reports, will not be available. For more info on how Petivity works in multi-cat homes, read our guide on How Petivity Works with Multiple Cats.
Your package will contain one monitor, a quick start guide, 6 AA batteries and a power cord.
Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor tracks your cat’s activity and alerts you to changes. It is not intended to diagnose your cat. (Diagnosing your cat should be done by a veterinarian.) However, it is designed to learn your cat’s habits and alert you to behavioral changes that could be caused by underlying conditions. If you receive such an alert, contact your veterinarian.

No need for cats to wear anything. Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor identifies cats using the data it collects.
Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor will monitor all cats in the home that use a litterbox with a Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor placed under it. The monitor will not be as effective when using with an indoor/outdoor cat since it can only monitor indoor activities.
The Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor is approximately 19” (length) x 14” (width) x 2” (height). The monitor’s non-skid top will help hold the litterbox firmly in place. We recommend litter trays and boxes be no larger than 21” (length) x 16” (width) to avoid tipping and ensure accurate weight readings.

The monitor is designed to support up to 60 pounds. Do not stand on the monitor or allow a weight of greater than 60 pounds to rest atop it.
Kittens grow and change quickly, which means their weight and behavioral data change quickly, too. Occasionally, these changes can negatively affect the accuracy of your data or cause false alerts. For now, we don’t recommend using Petivity with kittens.
The Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor is specifically designed for cats and won’t be effective with other animals.
Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor is very safe. Not only is it safe, it’s also designed to fit seamlessly into your cat’s environment. It doesn’t move, vibrate or make loud or intrusive sounds.

There are several steps you can take to smoothly integrate the device into your cat’s environment.
1. Remove the monitor from the package and put it out of the cat’s view for a few days.
2. Introduce the monitor to the room your litterbox is in, without placing it under your litterbox. Give your cat a few days to get used to the monitor’s presence. You can help the process along by placing treats or toys atop the monitor.
3. Once your cat is comfortable with the presence of the monitor, without placing it under the litterbox, turn the device on. Allow your cat a few days to get used to the subtle sounds and lights the monitor produces.
4. Once your cat is comfortable with the Petivity monitor (either ignoring it or engaging positively with it), move it next to the existing litterbox.
5. If your cat continues to use their litterbox as usual with the Petivity monitor nearby, place the monitor under the litterbox and add fresh litter. Cats enjoy clean boxes and will often jump in to test out new litter right after the box is cleaned.
6. Continue to monitor your cat’s behavior around the box, now with the help of Petivity. If necessary, restart the acclimation process. All cats are different and some need a little more time to get acclimated to new objects.
If the monitor is dropped or broken, please use caution as there could be potential sharp edges that could cause harm to animals or users. If small pieces break off, they can present a choking hazard or cause physical damage to animals or children. Dropping a monitor may cause a disruption in data. For customer support assistance, please contact our Customer Support team by calling 866-979-2477 or filling out the Contact Us form on our Support page.

The Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor is designed to work with most standard types of litter. Litter made from recycled paper may negatively impact the integrity of your data.
The monitor automatically measures the weight of the litterbox frequently throughout the day so it can account for litter being kicked out of the box.
Conveniently, no. You don’t need to change anything about how you maintain the litterbox. The system automatically gathers data throughout the day so it can account for common events like scooping or changing litter.
Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor requires a 2.4ghz WiFi network to connect to. If you are having difficulty connecting your device to WiFi, please check your router to make sure that 2.4ghz is enabled. If you continue to have issues, please check your router documentation. Some mesh routers may offer the option to temporarily disable the 5ghz network while you connect your device to the 2.4ghz network.

Once reset, the blue light will start to blink and the user will be able to connect to the monitor through the app and Wi-Fi.
- Wipe down with a moist cloth. If using spray cleaning products, spray the cloth rather than the monitor itself.
- Do not submerge the monitor in water or other liquids.
- Do not hose down or spray liquid at the monitor as this may cause liquid to enter the monitor and damage the electronics.
- The materials in these monitors have not been thoroughly evaluated for chemical resistance across the full range of cleaning products and disinfection agents. Cosmetic damage may occur to the surfaces over time if monitor is repeatedly wiped-down with cleaning or disinfecting products.
Do not remove the monitor feet (or disassemble any other parts of the monitor) to minimize the risk of losing or damaging parts, and to minimize choking hazards for small children and pets.
To maintain the integrity and accuracy of your Petivity data, it’s important to manage your monitors from a single device.
